Shrink Plastic: Feathered Crown

Now that you have Inkjet Shrink Plastic 101 under your belt (if you don’t, click here to be whisked away to that information page to learn the basics of working with inkjet shrink plastic!), you are ready to forge ahead with new projects that center around inkjet shrink plastic!

A recurring theme in my artwork is the use of bird imagery.  I love their colors, their songs, their beauty in flight…the list goes on and on.  You might say I have birds on the brain!  As an artist who continually experiments with ways to combine artistic techniques, images and products, I am always excited when a combination just sings to me. Many of the images I collect feature grumpy children and I felt this just set the stage for something like, oh, I don’t know…a bird…to be perched on their head, completely oblivious to the obvious consternation they were causing the child!

In this workshop we will be exploring ways to build up texture on your 2D surfaces with acrylic paint and products.  Add in some stenciling and shadowing and your image will seem to leap off your surface! Just adding a little extra oomph in these areas can really take your artwork to the next level!  Speaking of levels, we will be building up layers of flowers and birds created from inkjet shrink plastic that will result in fabulous headpieces…everyone will want to wear a feathered crown after this!  I hope you will join me in playing with these products and techniques and become a birdbrain yourself!  Fun fact:  a new 10-year scientific study shows that birds actually have more neurons in their forebrain (which controls cognitive behavior) than mammals and allows them to use tools, solve problems, plan for future needs, etc.  So, being called a birdbrain is actually complimentary!  I’d like to see a macaque try to build a nest…

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to cause a precipitate to fall out of solution!

Ahem…that’s basic chemistry and lots of fun, but…

 Actually, you will learn:

  • how to stabilize inket printed images for use in collage that use wet media
  • how to tint your inkjet images.
  • how to adhere your inkjet images to a substrate and protect them.
  • how to add texture to your substrate using fiber paste.
  • how to add acrylic paint in different ways to your image and substrate.
  • how to stencil on textured surfaces.
  • how to work with inkjet shrink plastic.
  • how to design/engineer your arrangements of shrink plastic birds and flowers.

In this course you’ll receive the following:

  • about four hours of video instruction  with “lifetime” access!
  • three downloadable PDF sheets of imagery already prepped and ready to use with inkjet shrink plastic and two downloadable PDF sheets of grumpy kids!
  • special give-aways of materials and original art!
  • loads of inspiration for you to take your artwork in new directions!

Supply list

Hover over highlighted words in blue to activate links..I’m a visual person…I like pictures of things!  A full supply list for each workshop will be provided with completed registration, but I want you to know that there are a few supplies that are fairly essential for completion of this project so that you may budget accordingly.  The materials for this course really won’t cost you a lot and many you might already have in your studio!

Grafix White INKJET Shrink Film (I do not recommend Shrinky Dinks Inkjet…I never could get it to print correctly, pieces stuck to themselves as they baked, the plastic didn’t flatten completely, and it smelled bad during baking.)

Toaster Oven (although you can shrink the plastic in your regular oven…I just like having dedicated craft appliances)

Access to an INKJET Printer (a laser printer will not work because it uses heat to set the ink and this heat might warp your shrink plastic)

Cradled panels, smooth finish, assorted small sizes

Golden fiber paste

Liquitex Gloss Medium and Varnish (green label)

Liquitex Matte Varnish (orange label)

Matte spray sealer

Pastels

5″ Sharp Scissors

Acrylic paint

Adhesive
